MDH Releases 2024 Annual Report

The Maryland Department of Health’s Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) team has released its 2024 Annual Report, which examines suspected non-fatal overdose trends across the state using emergency medical services (EMS) and emergency department (ED) data. The report helps identify patterns that can guide prevention and response efforts.

Key findings include:

  • More than 25,000 emergency department visits for suspected non-fatal drug overdoses.
  • Baltimore City and Washington County had the highest rates of EMS overdose calls in the state.
  • In these areas, Black Marylanders experienced significantly higher overdose rates than white Marylanders.
  • Family members, friends, and law enforcement were the people most likely to administer naloxone before EMS arrived.

Remember, safely storing and properly disposing of medications is one of the best ways to help prevent accidental overdoses. Lock, store, and dispose to help keep your family and community safe.
