Is it methamphetamine? Fentanyl? A combination of both? Does it also contain highly potent synthetic opioids such as cychlorphine or dangerous adulterants like xylazine or medetomidine? The reality is that there is often no way to know.
Today’s illicit drug supply is increasingly unpredictable. Counterfeit pills and powders may contain fentanyl, methamphetamine, or other powerful substances that are invisible to the naked eye. New and emerging adulterants—including veterinary sedatives like xylazine and medetomidine, as well as highly potent synthetic opioids such as cychlorphine—are making illicit drugs even more dangerous and increasing the risk of overdose.
The old phrase “pick your poison” no longer applies. Poison may be present whether you see it or not.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) continues to warn that illicit drugs can contain unexpected and potentially deadly substances, making every use a gamble. The safest choice is to avoid using illicit drugs altogether. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, know that help is available. Carrying naloxone (Narcan®) and knowing how to respond to an overdose can also save lives.
Safe storage remains an important prevention tool. Keep prescription and over-the-counter medications secured and out of reach of youth, regularly monitor medications in the home, and dispose of unused medications at authorized drop boxes or medication take-back events.
